Description
A preservative-free Shiraz from the heartland of that variety – the Barossa in South Australia. This is a loose, easy going wine, loaded up with a mix of black fruits and some darker, earthier tones. Plenty of chocolate and plum jam, mixed with tarry notes and some black pepper. Plenty of upfront fruit, and a wash of tannin to balance things out.
There’s something of a pattern that emerges when we look into our favourite Aussie wineries – they all have a tendency to come not from some ancestral heritage, passed down from father to son with all the sincerity that comes with centuries of expertise. Rather, they emerge from passion projects, run by mates looking to produce the kind of wines they want to sit down and enjoy themselves. This is definitely the case with Woods Crampton, run by riotous double act Aaran Woods and Nicholas Crampton, and focused on imbuing Barossa Shiraz (and a bunch of other Old World varietals) with equal parts Aussie innovation and Burgundian flair. It hasn’t taken Aaron and Nicholas long to make quite a splash on the Barossa scene and further afield. Their winery officially launched in 2010, and the following decade saw them pick up no shortage of awards and accolades, alongside an army of fans who lap up each release with cultish enthusiasm. Claiming not to have intended to make wines of such high calibre, but doing so solely as a result of the quality of the fruit they ended up growing, it’s the kind of success story we can really get behind.
